Monteverde, Costa Rica on 18/03/10

Straddling the continental divide at 1440 meters, the Monterverde and Santa Elena Cloud forest area gives guests a rare glimpse into life within the mountainous tropical jungles of Costa Rica. Home to over 100 species of mammals, including 5 species of cats alone, 400 species of birds, over tens of thousands of insects and nearly 2,500 species of plants, this area has been proclaimed as one of the most outstanding wildlife refugees in the Tropics. Consisting of two reserves, the area is one of the most ecotourism-orientated communities in Central America and boasts a wide variety of activities and things to explore. From zip-line tours, suspended bridge tours, coffee tours, horseback riding, hiking and more it is no wonder Monteverde is one of the most popular destinations in all of Costa Rica.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has been described as feeling similar to walking through a green version of an old European Cathedral. Described as a cloud forest instead of a rain forest because of its altitude, the clouds actually go through the canopy making the canopy extremely rich with butterflies, birds, insects and plants.  The reserve is run by a private non-profit reserve called the Tropical Science Center and is home to 6 ecological zones.

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a state owned non-profit. It receives cloudier and wetter weather givens its high elevation and provides visitors over 12 km of trails to explore, and a stunning canopy observation area and tower. The Reserve also offers gorgeous views of Arenal Lake and Volcano. It is by far the least busy of the two parks.

The town around Monteverde offers a number of great restaurants and accommodations that can fit any budget. For a higher end accommodation, make sure to check out the Arco Iris Lodge. Make your reservation here at  http://arcoirislodge.minihostels.com/. For a cheaper fare make sure not to miss out on the Hostel Cabinas el Pueblo, check them out at www.monteverde-backpackers.com

Come and see the stunning lush jungles of Monterverde and Santa Elena’s Cloud Forest! We look forward to meeting you!
