Jaco, Costa Rica on 18/03/10

Costa Rica’s quickest beach and ocean escape, the city and beaches of Jaco have long held a special position in the hearts of the landlocked citizens of the Central Valley.  Offering a unique balance between great surf and fishing, with all the cosmopolitan conveniences of a large and thriving metropolis, Jaco has long stood as one of Costa Rica’s top destinations for Ticos and foreigners alike.

Though a large city, Jaco offers guests a great array of outdoor activities and adventures to experience while staying on its shores. Surfing is the main draw of many tourists. While the rainy season is considered the best time of year for surf on the Pacific side, Jaco is lucky in that it enjoys consistently good surf year round. Just a bit further south is the famed surf beach of Playa Hermosa, which offers perhaps the most acclaimed waves in all of Costa Rica.

Swimming at the beaches of Jaco is generally safe, though there are a couple of locations that should be avoided. Make sure to stay away from the areas around the estuaries, which are rather polluted. Also, when out in the water make sure to steer clear of beginner surfers who may leave you with a large bump on your head from their flying surf boards. Another potential danger is the strong rip currents that can frequent the beach, so make sure to watch the lifeguard markings. In general, it is best to venture to one of the many gorgeous beaches that lie just to the north and south of the city. Check out Playa Esterillos and Playa Bejuco just southeast of the city. A little over 22 km from Jaco, these beaches are long, wide, and almost deserted. To the northwest is Playa Herradura, which is a hard-packed brown-sand-and-rock beach that sits along a verdant hillside.

The mountains around Jaco offer a great opportunity to become one with nature and move around. Fly through the tropical high jungle on a Canopy Tour, or keep your feet more grounded and simply hike around the beautiful primary and secondary rain forests of the Miros Mountains.

Gastronomy is another thing the city of Jaco can most certainly boast about. As one of the largest metropolises in Costa Rica, Jaco provides guests with a wide variety of cuisines and price ranges. From local ‘Sodas,’ offering typical Costa Rican cuisine, American meatloaf and potatoes to sushi there is a little something for every palate and desire in Jaco.

Whatever your interest Jaco most certainly can please just about any whim and desire. We look forward to meeting you!

hey i read all of your articles, and i have to say they are both great ctrnouies, but be real, costa rica won the climate round, which is true, about the people, the tie is absolutley correct because it doesnt depend on what you think, but on peoples opinion on what type of people they like to be surrounded by!! but things to do?? come on are you kidding me, to begin you left out almost the best things about panama which will take too long to talk about, but to me that was not fair it seems that you gave it to cr because of the reasons many have posted before.people find out for yourselves which country is more conveniente for you!!!!
